Full Job Description

The Kennel Assistant is responsible for the daily care and monitoring of hospital patients and boarding pets. For this reason, the Kennel Assistant must be compassionate and enjoy working closely with the patients.

This is a Part-time positon with the scheduled days and hours varying based on hospital needs. Weekend, holiday and evening work is possible. The position requires standing for long periods of time and some heavy lifting may be involved.The Kennel Assistant reports to the Kennel Supervisor and to the Hospital Manager.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Tasks:

Follow time clock procedures for clocking in and out at the start and end of the shift.

Report to work on time for each shift.

Ensure the kennel facility is clean and tidy, maintaining a professional appearance at all times.

Assist the Hospital Manager with special projects during slow times.

Client Services:

Maintain a professional appearance and calm demeanor with all clients and team members.

Answer client questions accurately and clearly.

Patient Care:

Walks, feeds and provides water for hospital patients and boarders.

Cleans patient cages and runs daily as needed.

Washes, dries and stores towels and boarding facility bedding.

Demonstrates and utilizes proper restraint techniques.

Monitors patients’ behaviors and notes potentially aggressive behaviors; requests assistance when needed.

Under the supervision of a Veterinary Technician, provides boarders’ medications and records treatments accurate on the cage notes form.

Escalates any patient health concerns to a Veterinary Technician or Veterinarian in a timely manner.

On the day of discharge, gathers all of the pets personal belongings for the client.

Bathes boarders before going home or if they are soiled from urine or feces.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY

Knowledge:

Basic veterinary medical knowledge is desired.

Appropriate telephone etiquette.

Skills:

Client service and interpersonal skills.

Patient restraint techniques.

Basic computer skills.

Reading and interpreting patient charts and treatment sheets.

Abilities:

Professional and courteous.

Flexible for scheduling purposes.

Willingness to learn.

Ability to remain calm under pressure.

Attention to detail.

Adherence to procedures and protocols.

Works well in a team environment.

Self starter and able to work with minimal supervision.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

High school diploma preferred.

Prior kennel experience is not required but is a plus.
